3 Smart Steps for Spring Cleaning Dental Health

It is Easter Week in the Motor City! Even if it’s not quite as warm of spring as we’d like yet, we still usually get the urge to do some spring activities and cleaning in our Metro Detroit homes during this time of year is a priority. Yet, it is time to do more than clean our closets, our garages, and our kitchens.

Spring cleaning is also great for our dental health! At DeCapite Family and Cosmetic Dentistry, we encourage our patients to think about smart ways to look at their dental health as well. Spring cleaning is not just about getting rid of clothes we cannot wear or organizing our cabinets.

Dr. Jim DeCapite is happy to share three smart steps for spring cleaning our smiles as we head to Easter Sunday:

  • Choose healthy snacks: Cheese, nuts, and fresh fruits and vegetables can be just as tasty as sweet or fattening snacks. A fresh spring apple that’s crunchy and juicy satisfies the taste buds and helps keep the mouth clean and healthy!
  • Floss and brush regularly: Remember the 2×2 rule. Brush twice a day for two minutes each. Ask  Jim DeCapiteand his expert professional staff about proper flossing and brushing techniques that keep mouths healthy and happy!
  • Schedule a dental cleaning: Spring is the perfect time of year to schedule that dental cleaning. While brushing and flossing every day will keep mouths healthy, a thorough dental cleaning takes it all one step further. A professional cleaning with DeCapite Family and Cosmetic Dentistry leaves the mouth healthy and the teeth ready for a beautiful spring smile!

At DeCapite Family and Cosmetic Dentistry, we enjoy the arrival of spring and the warmer weather. We also look forward to hearing from our patients who call to schedule their regular dental cleanings. We are excited about helping all our patients maintain good dental health throughout spring and the rest of the year.

Our professional staff is ready to meet the dental needs of our patients in the Livonia, Redford, Dearborn Heights, Plymouth, and surrounding Metro Detroit communities. We are conveniently located in Livonia, near the intersection of Schoolcraft and Merriman Roads. We accept new patients and, of course, all emergencies. Call the office today to set an appointment!

3 Healthy Choices for Easter Treats in the Motor City

Spring is soon to arrive in Metro Detroit! Springtime in the Motor City always brings colorful flowers, warmer weather, Detroit Tiger baseball, and treats for Easter. The staff at DeCapite Family and Cosmetic Dentistry is excited about the freshness of spring, especially when our patients in the Livonia, Redford, Dearborn Heights, Plymouth, and surrounding Metro Detroit suburbs decide to choose healthier options for themselves and for their family!

Easter Sunday brings lots of temptations when chocolate bunnies and marshmallow treats abound. We know our patients will try to make good decisions for their dental health as well as for their overall health.

Dr. Jim DeCapite offers three healthy choices for Easter treat choices for our patients in the Motor City:

  • Fresh fruit: Apple slices are a sweet – and healthy – treat! Crunchy fruit is good for the teeth as well. With a fibrous texture and high in fiber and water, fresh fruit such as a juicy, raw apple is great for the teeth and can be fun to eat!
  • Sugarless gum: Kids and adults alike love chewing gum. Jim DeCapite wants his patients to look for the ADA seal of approval on sugarless gum. The dental association approves only sugarless gum, knowing that it can be a healthy and enjoyable treat. Chewing sugarless gum increases the flow of saliva, reduces plaque acid, strengthens the teeth, and reduces tooth decay.
  • Raw, crunchy vegetables: What says “Easter Bunny” more than a handful of raw carrots? Have fun with shapes, forming bunny ears and smiling faces with crunchy, raw vegetables such as celery and leafy greens. Do not tell the kids, but carrots are high in fiber and vitamin A!

The staff at DeCapite Family and Cosmetic Dentistry wishes everyone in Southeast Michigan a very happy Easter and a wonderful warm spring! Enjoy family and friends during the spring holiday and make healthy choices always every single day.

Our office is conveniently located in Livonia near the intersection of Schoolcraft and Merriman Roads, and we serve our patients in the Livonia, Redford, Dearborn Heights, Plymouth, and surrounding Metro Detroit communities. We accept new patients and, of course, all emergencies. Call the office today to set an appointment!

Happy St. Patrick’s Day everyone!

4 Intriguing Tidbits of Dental Trivia

The mouth is incredibly complex and fascinating. At DeCapite Family and Cosmetic Dentistry, we enjoy sharing helpful information about dental health and its effects for our patients in the Livonia, Redford, Dearborn Heights, Plymouth, and the surrounding Metro Detroit communities. It is important to stay educated about the latest techniques and treatments, but it’s also fun to look at some fascinating facts about teeth and the mouth that surrounds them!

Dr. Jim DeCapite offers four intriguing tidbits of dental trivia, for the enjoyment and knowledge of all our friends in the Motor City and beyond:

  • Cotton candy was invented by a dentist: In 1897, Dr. William Morrison and John C. Wharton invented a treat called “fairy floss.” Dr. Morrison was, indeed, a dentist! Morrison and Wharton heated sugar in a spinning bowl device that they also invented and introduced it at the St. Louis World’s Fair in 1904. Fairy floss eventually became known as cotton candy!
  • The toothbrush is almost 240 years old: Although there is mention of a toothbrush in Chinese literature around 1600AD, the first record of a toothbrush being made was in England in 1780. Jim DeCapite and his professional staff urge our patients not to hold onto their toothbrush quite that long, instead recommending a new toothbrush every three to four months!
  • The jaw is a powerful muscle: The masseter or jaw muscle is one of the strongest muscles in the body! The jaw muscle can exert incredible pressure. When that pressure results in teeth grinding, though, it can cause serious issues.
  • A healthy mouth helps keep the rest of the body healthy: Dental health can help our patients reduce the risks of health problems in the rest of the body, like heart disease and poorly controlled diabetes. Healthy teeth and gums can make a huge difference to the health of the rest of the body!

The staff at DeCapite Family and Cosmetic Dentistry invites our patients to visit us in Livonia, near the intersection of Schoolcraft and Merriman Roads, for regular cleanings to improve their dental health and their overall health. We use the latest in dental technology and materials to ensure our patients are comfortable and happy with their results!

We look forward to meeting the dental needs of our patients in the Livonia, Redford, Dearborn Heights, Plymouth, and surrounding Metro Detroit communities. We accept new patients and, of course, all emergencies. Call the office today to set an appointment!

3 Healthy Treats that Show Valentine’s Day Love

The recent Holiday Season seemed to be all about the sweet treats. From the pies and cakes of Thanksgiving, through the fudge and cookies of Christmas, we continue with chocolates and candy for Valentine’s Day; Detroit loves its desserts and sugary snacks. At DeCapite Family and Cosmetic Dentistry we want everyone in Livonia and the Metro area to enjoy February with healthier treats for happy, healthy teeth!

For all our friends in the Motor City who are still recovering from the December holiday season and for those who have made resolutions for better dental health in 2019, Dr. Jim DeCapite offers some tips for healthy treats designed to show the love for Valentine’s Day and throughout the year:

  • Fresh fruit: Finish off a romantic dinner with fresh fruit instead of a sugary dish. Strawberries are a tasty treat for the special day, even without being dipped in chocolate! As a side benefit, strawberries contain malic acid, which is a natural teeth whitener.
  • Cheese selections: Jim DeCapite and his professional staff enjoy healthy cheese snacks. Offering a loved one a selection of tasty cheese is a great way to show love in a way that promotes good dental health. Cheese is high in calcium, which helps teeth stay strong!
  • Fun and healthy Valentine’s bag: Fill a bag with treats that are good for kids and adults alike and that they will enjoy more than chocolate! Include packs of sugarless gum, age-appropriate toys and books, and a special note to let them know much they are loved!

The staff at DeCapite Family and Cosmetic Dentistry wishes everyone a Happy Valentine’s Day, full of healthy treats and good dental health. Our staff is ready to help every patient maintain dental health during the Super Bowl, Valentine’s Day, and all year long. Remember, our dental office is conveniently located in Livonia, near the intersection of Schoolcraft (96) and Merriman Roads.

We look forward to meeting the dental needs of our patients in the western suburbs of Livonia, Redford, Dearborn Heights, Plymouth, and other surrounding Metro Detroit communities. We accept new patients and, of course, all emergencies.

4 Smart Ways to Keep Teeth Holiday Healthy

The Thanksgiving Weekend has arrived as the Lions battled the Bears, and Michigan WILL BEAT Ohio State. Christmas will be here before we know it! We all love to see family and friends during this special season, enjoy holiday parties, and eat and drink those special treats that we only have this time of year. The professional staff at DeCapite Family and Cosmetic Dentistry enjoys holiday gatherings and treats too! We also know that it’s important to stay focused on keeping our teeth healthy every day of the year!

Dr. Jim DeCapite and his professional staff want everyone in Livonia and the Westside to be aware of four smart ways to keep teeth healthy during the upcoming holidays:

  • Choose healthy foods: At family gatherings, holiday parties, and office events, there always seem to be lots of cookies, candy, and other sweet treats. There are probably also plates of cheese and crunchy fresh vegetables that are a better choice for healthy teeth. Enjoy treats in moderation and choose more healthy foods during the holidays and throughout the year.
  • Limit sugary Christmas drinks: Holiday beverages usually include punch, eggnog, and alcoholic mixes. At DeCapite Family and Cosmetic Dentistry, we urge our patients to limit these sugary drinks and to choose healthier beverages for better dental health.
  • Stay hydrated: Water is the best beverage for keeping the body hydrated and the teeth healthy every day of the year. During the holidays, in particular, it’s important to drink plenty of water to wash away those sugary treats!
  • Brush and floss every day: Family trips to see relatives and a calendar full of holiday activities can keep us busy. There is so much to do and see in the Metro Detroit area alone! Take the time, though, to brush and floss each day to keep those teeth healthy throughout the hectic holiday season.

Dr. Jim DeCapite and his professional staff want all our patients in the Metro Detroit area to take the time to enjoy quality dental health during the holidays and throughout the year. Contact us today for a professional dental cleaning and checkup to start the holidays off with a clean, healthy mouth!

We are conveniently located at 31544 Schoolcraft Rd. in Livonia MI, at the northwest corner of Schoolcraft and Merriman Roads, within a 20 to 30-minute drive from much of Metro Detroit, including Livonia, Redford, Dearborn Heights, Canton, Novi, Northville, Plymouth, Westland, Southfield, and Detroit.

3 Teeth Brushing Tips for Improved Dental Health

Dr. Jim DeCapite realizes that a lot of kids and many adults in the Metro Detroit area are in a quick hurry early in the morning. Teeth brushing may be something that gets done quickly as everyone rushes out the door to school and to work. At DeCapite Family and Cosmetic Dentistry, we encourage our patients to take their time and brush their teeth properly for good dental health. A few minutes in the morning and again in the evening can make a lifetime of difference!

Dr. Jim DeCapite and his professional staff want everyone in Livonia and the surrounding areas to learn these three tips for brushing their teeth, so they can enjoy improved dental health:

  • Brush for two full minutes: Most people, adults and children alike, do not brush long enough. Two minutes is the recommended time needed to ensure a good, thorough cleaning. It may help to sing a song (not out loud, of course) that lasts two minutes, such “Welcome to the Working Week” by Elvis Costello or “All Shook Up” by Elvis Presley!
  • Brush twice a day: At DeCapite Family and Cosmetic Dentistry, we understand busy mornings and evenings. However, it’s important to take two minutes after getting up, and before going back to bed to brush, to keep teeth clean and healthy.
  • Use the proper technique for brushing: Start with the outer surfaces, then brush the inner surfaces, and finally the chewing surfaces. Outer, inner, chew – maybe singing that for two minutes will help!

Always remember, 2×2! Brush twice a day for two minutes, using the proper technique for improved dental health for the whole family. Dr. Jim DeCapite and his professional staff want all our patients in the Metro Detroit area to take the time to enjoy quality dental health. Contact us today for a professional dental cleaning so those teeth will be even cleaner and healthier!

We are conveniently located at 31544 Schoolcraft Rd. in Livonia MI, at the northwest corner of Schoolcraft and Merriman Roads, within a 20 to 30-minute drive for much of Metro Detroit, including Livonia, Redford, Dearborn Heights, Canton, Novi, Northville, Plymouth, Westland, Southfield, and Detroit.

3 Important Ways Dental Health Can Benefit Our Patients

At DeCapite Family and Cosmetic Dentistry, our focus is on the oral health of our patients. We also know, though, that our patients need to be healthy in many other ways. A person’s overall health can be affected by many factors. Dental health is one significant aspect that can make a difference in other areas of the body. Everything in our bodies is connected! When we keep our teeth and gums clean and properly maintained, it helps us to live healthier lives overall.

Dr. Jim DeCapite shares these three ways that good dental health can benefit overall health for our patients:

  • Heart disease prevention: Bacterial infection in the mouth can reach the heart, contributing to heart disease, blockage, and strokes. Keeping the mouth clean and healthy can help keep the heart free from inflammation and infection caused by gum disease and other oral bacteria.
  • Memory improvement: Just as gum disease and bacterial infection can affect the heart, it can also have an impact on brain function. Gingivitis has been proven to have an effect on memory loss and cognitive capabilities. Keeping gums healthy can help keep the mind sharper!
  • Self-esteem boost: A clean, healthy smile gives our patients the confidence they need to boost their self-esteem and to have a brighter outlook on live. A bright smile and good oral health can contribute to better eating habits, better sleeping habits, and better overall health.

The professional staff at DeCapite Family and Cosmetic Dentistry is here to help our patients in the Metro Detroit area enjoy quality dental health that will benefit their overall health. Contact us today for an appointment for a checkup and a professional dental cleaning.

Our office is located at 31544 Schoolcraft Rd. in Livonia MI, at the northwest corner of Schoolcraft and Merriman Roads; less than a 20-minute drive of much of Metro Detroit, including Livonia, Redford, Dearborn Heights, Canton, Novi, Northville, Plymouth, Westland, Southfield, and Detroit.

4 Tips for Good Dental Health for Kids Going Back to School

Summer is drawing to a close in Metro Detroit and we are sure all the kids are ready to get back to school. The beginning of a new school year is an exciting and busy time for families. Once school gets underway in Livonia and the Motor City, of course, schedules get even more hectic. There are so many things to do, from after school activities, sports, and homework and these take up a lot of the family’s time. It’s important throughout the school year, though, to keep kids and the rest of the family on track with healthy activities as well.

Dr. Jim DeCapite suggests these four great tips for maintaining good dental health for kids who are heading back to school:

  • Get back on a regular sleep schedule: Summer was great for staying up late and sleeping late, but now that school is back in session, kids need a regular schedule for bedtime and for getting up in the morning in time to get ready for school. Sleep is very important for children and their parents, especially when there is so much going on throughout the day!
  • Pack healthy foods in lunchboxes: Make healthy choices fun, with veggies and dip or sliced fruit packed in the kids’ lunchboxes. Include a non-sugary beverage. Give kids healthy sandwich and snack options and let them create their own tasty treats. If they make it, they’ll be more inclined to eat it!
  • Make time for regular brushing and flossing: Schedules can get very hectic as we get into the school year. Make sure everyone in the family takes time to brush and floss every day, no matter how much homework there is or how many school activities there are to attend.
  • Get regular dental checkups and cleaning from Dr. DeCapite: Keep those regular appointments for checkups and professional cleanings throughout the school year to maintain good dental health.

The professional staff at DeCapite Family and Cosmetic Dentistry and our families are excited about the upcoming school year in the Metro Detroit area. Contact us today for an appointment for the kids going back to school and for the rest of the family.

Our office is located at 31544 Schoolcraft Rd. in Livonia MI, at the northwest corner of Schoolcraft and Merriman Roads, within a 20 to 30-minute drive of much of Metro Detroit, including Livonia, Redford, Dearborn Heights, Canton, Novi, Northville, Plymouth, Westland, Southfield, and Detroit.

4 Great Summer Foods for Healthy Outdoor Eating

Everyone loves a summer gathering in Motown. Parties, picnics, and barbecues bring family and friends together in Metro Detroit to enjoy the warm weather, good times, and the outdoor food! Guests usually ask what they can bring, whether it’s a big bag of Better Made chips or a cold Faygo.

At DeCapite Family and Cosmetic Dentistry, we want everyone in Livonia and the Motor City to ask their guests to bring healthier options.

Dr. Jim DeCapite suggests these four great summer foods for healthy, happy outdoor gatherings:

  • Crunchy fruits and vegetables: Summer in the city means it’s the perfect time for fresh fruits that are good for dental health. Fruit and vegetable trays with apples, pears, seedless watermelon, strawberries, carrots, celery, and raw broccoli are good for teeth and for the rest of the body! Of course, they’re all delicious when served cold and fresh!
  • Cheese and other dairy products: What’s a grilled burger without a tasty slice of melted cheese? Cheese trays are also great to serve at a Westside summer cookout. Dairy products, including milk and yogurt, are high in calcium and phosphorus and that helps protect and strengthen enamel. These delicious treats may also reduce the potential for gum disease.
  • Water: Instead of sugary drinks, like soda or sports drink, the most refreshing beverage for a party or barbecue is ice cold water. For a little more taste, add some fruit slices to a cool pitcher of fluoridated water. It’s good for dental health and looks pretty on the picnic table!
  • Sugarless gum: Replace the sugary mints provided by friends and family after dinner with pieces of sugarless gum. Chewing sugarless gum for 20 minutes after meals may also help prevent tooth decay!

Summer is a great time for getting together with friends and family for a good meal. At DeCapite Family and Cosmetic Dentistry we want that meal to be fun and healthy!

While enjoying the good times of summer vacation, make sure to take time for a good dental checkup and cleaning. Contact us today for an appointment or back to school checkup. Our office is conveniently located in Livonia, near the intersection of Schoolcraft and Merriman Roads. We accept new patients and, of course, all emergencies.
