3 Travel Tips for Good Dental Health

Summer is travel season for many families in Livonia and the Motor City. Heading up north and to our beautiful coasts are what we need to do to enjoy what Michigan offers. Trips to see grandparents, cousins, aunts, and uncles are also a fun way to start the vacation season. Many in the Metro Detroiters head to a variety of places around the Great Lakes for fun and enjoyable family time. No matter the destination or the length of the trip, the professional staff at DeCapite Family and Cosmetic Dentistry urges everyone to remember to take care of their dental health while on the road.

Dr. Jim DeCapite reminds all traveling families of these three great tips for maintaining good dental health during the summer vacation season:

  • Pack a new toothbrush and plenty of floss: Along with the swimsuits, sunscreen, and comfortable walking shoes, remember to pack everyone’s toothbrush and floss. More importantly, with all the excitement of a road trip and seeing new places, make sure everyone in the family continues to brush and floss twice a day!
  • Get a professional dental cleaning before leaving: Summer travel preparations should include a stop at the dentist, so everyone in the family starts the trip with a healthy, clean mouth. A checkup can also find potential minor issues before they become big problems on the road. Contact us today to set an appointment to get the whole family ready to go on that exciting vacation.
  • Choose healthy food and beverages on the road: It can be tempting to live on a junk food diet when traveling. Enticing new treats are found at every diner and souvenir shop along the road. Take the time to make good choices, especially to have everyone drink lots of healthy, refreshing water while on family vacation.

The staff of DeCapite Family and Cosmetic Dentistry wants all our patients to enjoy a well-deserved family vacation this summer. Be sure to visit us before hitting the road! Our office is conveniently located in Livonia, near the intersection of Schoolcraft and Merriman Roads. We accept new patients and, of course, all emergencies.

7 Important Reasons Kids Need to See Dr. DeCapite This Summer

Kids in Livonia and the Motor City will soon be out of school and ready for their summer break. Vacation is a great time to be sure children of all ages are visiting Dr. Jim DeCapite on a regular basis. At DeCapite Family and Cosmetic Dentistry, we realize that many children (and a lot of adults) are intimidated by the thought of visiting the dentist. The earlier children get to know their dentist and realize the many benefits of seeing the dentist regularly, the more comfortable they will be with their visits and checkups.

Dr. Jim DeCapite wants every child in the greater Detroit area to get excited about the seven important reasons to see the dentist regularly, starting this summer:

  • Protection for summer sports: Kids who play summer sports need to protect their teeth! A mouthguard, properly fitted by a dentist, will help keep their teeth and face safe.
  • Alignment check: When baby teeth fall out and adult teeth come in, it’s important to make sure all the teeth are lining up correctly.
  • Cavity prevention: A child who goes to the dentist regularly is checked for signs of potential cavities and other dental issues by our professional staff.
  • Regular Checkups: When cavities do happen, it’s important to catch them early. A regular dental visit will keep small cavities from becoming larger ones, particularly as young children dip into the sugary treats over the summer months!
  • Brushing skills check: Jim DeCapite and his professional dental team teach kids (and adults) how to brush and floss properly, for skills that will benefit their dental health throughout their lives.
  • Grinding protection: As children grow older, their bodies change and they may experience more stress, leading to grinding of their teeth. During a regular dental visit, the dentist can detect and help prevent damage from grinding.
  • Dental cleaning: Even when children are doing a good job of brushing and flossing, they still need to see the dentist regularly for a thorough dental cleaning. This applies to adults too!

Dr. Jim DeCapite wants patients of all ages to visit the dentist regularly, for healthy, happy teeth! Contact us today to set an appointment. The office of DeCapite Family and Cosmetic Dentistry is conveniently located in Livonia, near the intersection of Schoolcraft and Merriman Roads. We accept new patients and, of course, all emergencies.

4 Important Dental Steps to a Healthier Mouth in the Motor City

Our overall health can often be affected by our dental health! Dental problems can cause issues in other areas, often resulting in headaches or other related concerns. When we have a healthy mouth, we tend to feel better. At DeCapite Family and Cosmetic Dentistry, we work with our patients in Livonia and the Westside of Detroit to ensure they feel good about their teeth and their dental health.

Dr. Jim DeCapite wants our patients in the greater Detroit Metro Area to know that there are four simple steps to take for a healthier mouth:

  • Eat fresh, crunchy fruits and vegetables: When our patients eat more apples, carrots, and other crunchy, healthy fruits and vegetables, they enjoy better dental health and better overall health! Of course, the fruits and vegetables are healthier for our bodies, but they can also help improve our dental health by producing saliva that rinses away bacteria and food particles!
  • Drink plenty of water: Fresh, clean water is much better for our bodies and our teeth than sugary beverages. Drinking tap water that contains fluoride gives teeth the added benefit of protection against decay.
  • Brush and floss: Remember the 2×2 rule! Every day, brush for two minutes twice a day. Floss at least once a day to improve dental health.
  • See Dr. DeCapite on a regular basis: A professional cleaning can get to the places that regular brushing and flossing can miss. A regular checkup can help the professional staff at DeCapite Family and Cosmetic Dentistry ensure that our patients in Livonia and the Motor City have a healthy mouth throughout the year!

Dr. Jim DeCapite is focused on making sure patients understand the connection between good dental health and overall health. Following these simple steps can help our patients in the greater Detroit metro area enjoy a happy, healthy mouth!

Contact us today to set an appointment for a dental cleaning and checkup! The office of Jim DeCapite DDS is conveniently located in Livonia, near the intersection of Schoolcraft and Merriman Roads. We accept new patients and, of course, all emergencies.

3 Great Options for Tooth Replacement in Metro Detroit

Keeping teeth healthy is our main goal at DeCapite Family and Cosmetic Dentistry. We also know, though, that our patients in Livonia and in Metro Detroit sometimes need dental repair and even replacement of missing teeth. Every tooth plays an important role in speaking, chewing, and in maintaining proper alignment of other teeth. Our experienced professional staff works to ensure that our metro Detroit patients continue to enjoy the self confidence of dental health.

Dr. Jim DeCapite has the skills and experience to help our patients regain that healthy, happy smile with these three great options for tooth replacement and repair:

  • Bridges: A bridge is a device used to replace missing teeth that attaches artificial teeth to adjacent natural teeth, called abutment teeth. Bridges are either permanently attached (fixed bridges), or they can be removable. Fixed bridges are a great way to restore dental health and appearance.
  • Dental implants: Implants start with tiny titanium posts that are placed into the jawbone where teeth are missing. Replacement teeth are then made over the posts or attachments. Dental implants are designed to provide a foundation for replacement teeth that look, feel, and function like natural teeth.
  • Crowns: Crowns are a reliable solution for major dental problems caused through accidents, diseases, or wear and tear. A crown can replace a missing tooth and can offer support to misshapen teeth or badly broken teeth. At DeCapite Family and Cosmetic Dentistry, we use this technique for repairing the most severe of dental problems, to offer a complete smile and a functional bite.

The professional dental staff wants our patients in Livonia and the Motor City to enjoy the confidence of well-aligned teeth and a healthy smile. We invite those who have missing or broken teeth to visit us to learn about the most appropriate solutions for tooth replacement and repair.

Our offices are located in Livonia, near the intersection of Schoolcraft and Merriman Roads. We accept new patients and, of course, all emergencies. Contact us today to set an appointment!

5 Fascinating Facts About Teeth and Dental Health

At DeCapite Family and Cosmetic Dentistry, we not only help our patients in Livonia and the Motor City take care of their teeth and gums, but we also like to help them learn more about dental health. Teeth and gums have not really changed that much, but the way we’ve treated them certainly has changed throughout the centuries! A little dental trivia and history can be fun!

Dr. Jim DeCapite offers these five fascinating facts about teeth and dental health:

  • Tooth enamel is the strongest substance in the body: Teeth are harder than bones! Unlike bones, though, teeth cannot repair themselves. Once a tooth is broken, it must be repaired or replaced by a professional dentist.
  • Early toothpaste was probably made out of pulverized eggshells and oxen hooves: The first toothpaste with flavor was not invented until the mid-1800s. Toothpaste in a squeezable tube followed about two decades later.
  • Early dental floss was made of silk: In the early 1800s, a New Orleans dentist told his patients to use strands of silk between their teeth to clean them better. Nylon dental floss was not invented until World War II.
  • Teeth are as unique as fingerprints: Dental records are often used for identification because no two people’s teeth are alike, not even identical twins!
  • Regular dental cleanings can help prevent heart attacks. Inflammation is common to gum disease and heart disease. A recent study found that people who had their teeth professionally scaled at least once every two years were 24% less likely to have a heart attack.

The professional dental staff at DeCapite Family and Cosmetic Dentistry invites our patients to visit us for regular cleanings to improve their dental health and their overall health. We use the latest in dental technology and materials to ensure our patients are comfortable and happy with their results!

The office is conveniently located in Livonia, near the intersection of Schoolcraft and Merriman Roads. We accept new patients and, of course, all emergencies. Contact us today to set an appointment!

4 Healthy Ways to Show Love and Smiles on Valentine’s Day

Boxes of chocolates, candy hearts, and sweet cupcakes covered in thick frosting are images that first come to mind when thinking about treats for Valentine’s Day. The professional staff at DeCapite Family and Cosmetic Dentistry wants everyone in Livonia and the Motor City to share their love on the upcoming holiday, but in a way, that doesn’t involve an overload of sugar!

Dr. Jim DeCapite suggests four ways to show some love with a smile on Valentine’s Day:

  • Strawberries and other fresh fruit: Strawberries are a tasty treat for the special day, even without being dipped in chocolate! As a side benefit, strawberries contain malic acid, which is a natural teeth whitener.
  • Snuggly soft stuffed animals: Kids, especially, tend to love cozy, stuffed Valentine bears and bunnies but a lot of adults love them, too! A snuggly soft stuffed animal warms the heart and is much better for dental health than candy.
  • Flowering plants: Flowers on Valentine’s Day may seem too traditional for some, but the gift of a live plant combines lasting flowers with the health benefits of an indoor plant.
  • Healthy, fun treat bag: Kids enjoy opening treat bags, so fill one with treats that are good for them and that are fun! Include packs of sugarless gum, age-appropriate toys, and a special note to let them know much they are loved!

The expert dental staff at DeCapite Family and Cosmetic Dentistry wishes our patients in Livonia, Redford, and the surrounding areas of the west side of Metro Detroit a happy and healthy Valentine’s Day!

Dr. Jim also encourage everyone to brush regularly, particularly if some of those Valentine’s treats involve chocolate, and to see us for a regular cleaning and check-up. The office of DeCapite Family and Cosmetic Dentistry is conveniently located in Livonia, near the intersection of Schoolcraft and Merriman Roads. We accept new patients and, of course, all emergencies. Contact us today to set an appointment!

3 Reasons to Visit Dr. DeCapite in the New Year

Winter is here in the Metro Detroit area and the new year is on the horizon. At DeCapite Family and Cosmetic Dentistry, we recognize that many of our patients make resolutions for better health, including exercising and eating better. We encourage everyone to add “visit the dentist regularly” to that list for a happy, healthy smile throughout 2018.

Dr. Jim DeCapite offers three reasons to visit the dentist in the new year:

  • Keep that smile healthy: During regular dental check-ups, the dentist can answer questions or offer suggestions for choosing a good toothpaste, for brushing properly, and for other concerns patients may have about their overall dental health. Professional guidance can help keep that smile healthy throughout the year.
  • Take care of the little things: Visiting the dentist regularly helps our patients take care of the little things before they become big, painful, and expensive things. We want our patients to be comfortable and happy, so we urge everyone to call us as soon as they feel any kind of pain or have any issues with their teeth or gums. We can take care of it right away, so our patients can have healthy mouths again.
  • Set a good example for the family: Children are often intimidated by dentist visits because they do not know what to expect. When a parent visits the dentist on a regular basis and shares how happy it makes them to do so, the whole family will look forward to a positive experience. Of course, the whole family can then enjoy a happy, healthy smile together throughout the new year!

At DeCapite Family and Cosmetic Dentistry we help our patients in Livonia, Redford, and the surrounding areas of the west side of Metro Detroit become comfortable during their dentist visits. We want to encourage everyone to visit the dentist more regularly, for preventative care and to take care of little things before they become big things!

DeCapite Family and Cosmetic Dentistry is conveniently located in Livonia, near the intersection of Schoolcraft and Merriman Roads. We accept new patients and, of course, all emergencies. Contact us today to set an appointment!

5 Ways to Maintain Healthy Teeth During the Holidays!

Here comes Thanksgiving! Cold weather is finally settling in and holiday lights are going up across Metro Detroit. The holidays bring family gatherings, parties with friends, and lots of delicious baked goods, pies, candy, the Thanksgiving Day Parade, and the Christmas lights along Hines Drive. At DeCapite Family and Cosmetic Dentistry, we urge our patients to remember their dental health throughout the holiday season, while enjoying some of those tasty treats.

Dr. Jim DeCapite offers five ways for our patients to maintain healthy teeth during the holidays and all through the year:

  • Enjoy the turkey: Holiday diners love their turkey and for good reason. Turkey is loaded with protein and phosphorus, both of which are good for the body and the teeth.
  • Drink plenty of water: Staying hydrated is important for many reasons, during the holidays and every day of the year! Water with fluoride helps keep teeth strong and keeps the body ready for all of those family get-togethers.
  • Limit the sweets: Pies, candy, and cookies that adorn most holiday tables are certainly enticing and especially delicious when they are homemade. Enjoy these once-a-year treats in moderation, while also looking for other healthier options on the table!
  • Choose fresh, crunchy veggies: Carrots, broccoli, and celery are often found on holiday tables as well and are the better option for snacking, for healthier teeth and a healthier body!
  • Don’t forget to brush and floss: The holidays can be hectic, with shopping, cooking, and family visits. Always make the time in that busy schedule to brush and floss twice a day, particularly after dipping into the cookie tray!

Our expert staff at DeCapite Family and Cosmetic Dentistry wants our patients in Livonia, Redford, and the surrounding areas of the westside of Metro Detroit to enjoy the holidays with a happy, healthy smile. Dr. Jim DeCapite has over 30 years of experience and understands his patients’ needs, staying current with the latest technologies for keeping teeth and gums healthy.

DeCapite Family and Cosmetic Dentistry is conveniently located in Livonia, near the intersection of Schoolcraft and Merriman Roads, just off I-96. We accept new patients and, of course, all emergencies.

Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

4 Helpful Tips for Sensitive Teeth from Dr. Jim DeCapite

Many of our patients in the Metro Detroit and Livonia tell us they have sensitive teeth. At DeCapite Family and Cosmetic Dentistry, we work with each patient to find the reasons for any discomfort they may experience. Sensitive teeth can be the result of a variety of causes and there are many ways to alleviate the symptoms.

Dr. Jim DeCapite offers the following four tips for teeth sensitivity that help support happy smiles:

  • Maintain a clean mouth: Sensitivity to hot and cold food and drink can become worse if the teeth and gums are not kept clean. Regular brushing and flossing can help alleviate these symptoms.
  • Use a medicated toothpaste or mouth rinse: Brushing gently and regularly with products made for sensitive teeth can make the difference. An abrasive toothpaste can actually aggravate sensitive teeth.
  • Avoid acidic foods: Citrus fruits and juices, coffee, carbonated sodas, and carbs that contain a lot of sugar can also aggravate sensitive teeth. Our patients who consume these foods can help alleviate their sensitivity by waiting at least one hour before brushing and having a glass of milk in the meantime to neutralize the acids.
  • Have Decapite check for gum disease: Sensitive teeth may actually be the result of gum issues. Receding or diseased gums cannot protect the teeth like they are supposed and the result can be tooth sensitivity.

Our expert staff at DeCapite Family and Cosmetic Dentistry want our patients in Livonia, Redford, and the surrounding areas of the westside of Detroit to enjoy having a healthy mouth, without worrying about sensitive teeth. With over 30 years of experience, Dr. Jim DeCapite continues to focus on his patients’ needs while staying current with the latest technologies for keeping teeth and gums healthy.

DeCapite Family and Cosmetic Dentistry is conveniently located in Livonia, near the intersection of Schoolcraft and Merriman Roads. We accept new patients and, of course, all emergencies. Contact us today to set an appointment!

3 Popular Cosmetic Treatments for an Attractive Smile

Healthy teeth are extremely important. At DeCapite Family and Cosmetic Dentistry, our courteous and professional staff help each patient on Metro Detroit’s Westside and suburbs with their dental health as well as their smile. We believe that being able to smile, with attractive, healthy teeth, builds confidence by enabling our patients to feel better about themselves. There are three very important and popular treatments offered that help create and maintain a happy, healthy smile.

Dr. Jim DeCapite offers patients three cosmetic treatments that can improve the appearance of our patients’ teeth:

  • Bonding: For a discolored or chipped tooth, a resin that is similar in color to the natural teeth is bonded to the tooth. The material can then be sculpted into the desired shape. Once the resin is set, it is trimmed, smoothed and polished to a natural appearance.
  • Porcelain veneers: Thin shells of ceramic, porcelain veneers bond directly to the front surfaces of the teeth. Porcelain veneers are simple and versatile. Dr. Jim designs each one individually to match and enhance the characteristics of each patient’s smile.
  • Teeth Whitening: A safe and effective method for brightening discolored teeth, whitening treatments are a low-cost option that can be easily maintained for a whiter smile. Whitening treatments allow us to promise improvements in yellowing, aging, or stained teeth.

Our dental patients in Livonia, Redford Township, and the surrounding areas of the Westside do not have to live with chipped, cracked, or discolored teeth that may be embarrassing or uncomfortable. We have an expert staff at DeCapite Family and Cosmetic Dentistry who work to make sure all of our patients have healthy, happy smiles.
