4 Perfect Foods for Beneficial Dental Health

Across Metro Detroit, many people think of dental health as simply brushing, flossing, and visiting the dentist on a regular basis. While these dental habits are definitely important, at DeCapite Family and Cosmetic Dentistry, we want our patients to know they can actually help their personal overall health as well by eating the right foods! There are certain foods that need limitation; too much sugar is never good. Even certain fruits contain citric acid that can erode enamel.

Dr. Jim DeCapite describes four foods that are good for dental health and for overall health:

  • Fiber-rich vegetables: Yes, leafy green vegetables are good for teeth. Chewing a healthy bowl of spinach provides the body with cholesterol-fighting nutrients and keeps the teeth clean. The simple act of chewing creates mouth-cleansing saliva.
  • Sugarless gum: Chewing sugarless gum can help keep the mouth clean as well. Mint-flavored gum is best, and try to avoid the citric acids found in the fruit-flavored variety.
  • Cheese: The calcium in cheese and other dairy products is good for healthy bones and teeth! Cheese can provide the minerals that strengthen teeth and, of course, it is delicious too!
  • Water: Although not technically a “food,” water is very important for good dental health. Water keeps the body hydrated and fluoridated water from the tap can help prevent tooth decay.

It is important to brush and floss every day, just as it is important for good dental health to visit the office of DeCapite Family and Cosmetic Dentistry for those regular check-ups. Our patients in the greater Detroit area should also look at the foods and drinks they consume, to be sure they are helping their teeth and mouth stay healthy throughout the year as well.

Come see us to learn more about good dental health for the entire family! DeCapite Family and Cosmetic Dentistry is conveniently located in Livonia, near the intersection of Schoolcraft and Merriman Roads. We accept new patients and, of course, all emergencies. Contact us today to set an appointment!

3 Ways to Help Livonia Kids Look Forward to the Dentist

Good dental health starts with youngsters having regular visits to Dr. Jim DeCapite. At DeCapite Family and Cosmetic Dentistry, our entire team is very child-friendly. We want to make sure our youngest patients in the Livonia area are comfortable and even excited when they come to see us. We focus on preventative care, to help all of our patients learn good habits that will help them maintain healthy, happy teeth regardless of their age.

A child who is going to the dentist for the first time probably has a lot of questions and maybe even a bit of anticipation. Children who go to the dentist early in life, accept it as a healthy and normal experience.

Dr. Jim DeCapite offers three ways to help our youngest patients in the Livonia, Redford, and the surrounding areas of Metro Detroit’s westside look forward to their visit:

  • Come in for a preview before the visit: The unknown can be scary to a child. We are happy to have kids come in to get an idea of how friendly and helpful we are, before their actual visit. A preview will help calm their fears and get them excited about coming back for their visit.
  • Read books about happy trips to the dentist: Share stories about other kids who have gone to the dentist for great visits and come out smiling!
  • Talk about what we will be doing: Parents can share their own stories about how comfortable and happy their trips to the dentist have been, especially about how friendly everyone is in DeCapite’s office.

When children look forward to their dentist visit, they get more excited about taking good care of their teeth. That can help prevent cavities and other problems as they grow older. We are very excited about seeing smiling and happy kids and their parents come to our office.

DeCapite Family and Cosmetic Dentistry is conveniently located in Livonia, near the intersection of Schoolcraft and Merriman Roads. We accept new patients from the region and, of course, all emergencies.

Call our office today to get everyone in the family, children and parents alike, started on good dental health!

4 Important Reasons to See Dr. Jim DeCapite DDS

Regular visits to Dr. Jim DeCapite can help keep teeth and gums healthy. In between cleanings and exams, though, we know our patients in the Livonia, Redford, and the surrounding areas of the west side of Metro Detroit may need to visit our office for other reasons.  At DeCapite Family and Cosmetic Dentistry, we want our patients to feel comfortable and to know when they need to come see us. Our team is committed to patient dental health.

Dr. DeCapite encourages everyone to visit our office at any time if there is a concern, and especially for any of the following four very important reasons:

  • Toothache: A toothache does not go away by itself. It usually means something is wrong and needs professional attention. Often, a toothache indicates a cavity that needs to be filled before the pain will subside.
  • Sensitivity: When teeth are sensitive to hot or cold, it can indicate an issue such as tooth decay, a broken tooth, or even gum disease. While there are a number of over-the-counter products made for sensitive teeth, a visit to Doctor Jim is necessary to make sure there is nothing serious causing the sensitivity.
  • Bad breath: While bad breath may result from strong-flavored foods, it can also be a sign of gum disease. For bad breath that continues despite brushing and flossing, a trip to our office in Livonia can help determine the cause and provide relief.
  • Dry mouth: Stress and certain medications can cause a dry mouth, as can more serious health conditions. Dry mouth can lead to other dental problems and should be treated professionally here in the office.

At DeCapite Family and Cosmetic Dentistry, we want our patients to call and make an appointment whenever they have a dental need. Our expert staff is knowledgeable, friendly, and helpful. We look forward to helping all of our patients maintain healthy teeth and gums. Our brand-new offices are conveniently located in Livonia, near the intersection of Schoolcraft and Merriman Roads.  Our team is ready to help all of our patients in the Livonia, Redford, Dearborn Heights, Plymouth, and surrounding Metro Detroit communities! Call the office today to take care of all these dental needs and more!

5 Great Tips When Choosing Toothpaste

Toothpaste options abound on store shelves in Livonia, Redford, and the surrounding area on the westside of Metro Detroit. In fact, toothpaste choices can simply be overwhelming with so many different types and brands. And each brand has several different varieties designed for different needs. At DeCapite Family and Cosmetic Dentistry, patients have choices.

Here are five great tips for choosing the right toothpaste:

  • Cavity prevention: Toothpaste that contains fluoride can help protect teeth against cavities and can fight sensitivity. It can help make tooth enamel stronger, which protects teeth from acid damage. Fluoride can be dangerous if swallowed in large amounts, so use care when brushing with fluoride toothpaste.
  • Whitening: Toothpaste generally does not actually whiten teeth. Instead, it contains scrubbing materials that remove stains. Whitening toothpaste can provide positive short-term results; however, at DeCapite Family and Cosmetic Dentistry, we offer teeth whitening treatments that can provide a near-permanent solution for maintaining an important sparkling smile!
  • Flavors: There seem to be as many flavor choices on the toothpaste aisle as there are types of toothpaste! Choosing the right flavor can help family members look forward to brushing their teeth and that’s a win for everyone! Children, especially, may be more inclined to brush their teeth regularly if they have fruity-flavored toothpaste to enjoy.
  • Consistency: There is also a wide range of toothpaste types available when it comes to choosing a gel, paste, baking soda, or even powdered toothpaste. Again, choose the consistency that makes family members want to brush their teeth.
  • Sensitivity: For patients with sensitive teeth, toothpaste designed for this need can help. Over-the-counter toothpaste contains the critical ingredients that can help ease sensitivity.

At DeCapite Family and Cosmetic Dentistry, we encourage our patients to discuss all of their dental needs with our expert staff, including which toothpaste is best for them. Our offices are conveniently located in Livonia, near the intersection of Schoolcraft and Merriman Roads.  Our dental team is ready to help all of our patients in the Livonia, Redford, Dearborn Heights, Plymouth, and surrounding Metro Detroit communities!

Call the office today to get started on good dental health and good overall health!

3 Surprising Health Benefits of Good Dental Health

Regular brushing and flossing are great for dental health, but important habit can also have surprising benefits for overall good health. Teeth and gums are connected to the rest of the body in a number of important ways. It is interesting to note that keeping the mouth clean and healthy can actually contribute to the prevention of some diseases in other parts of the body. At DeCapite Family and Cosmetic Dentistry, we help our patients on the Westside of Metro Detroit to enjoy healthy teeth and gums.

Dr. Jim DeCapite wants everyone in Livonia, Redford, and the surrounding regions to learn the three surprising health benefits of good dental health:

  • The prevention of heart disease: Gingivitis, an inflammation in the mouth caused by bacteria, can play a role in clogged arteries. Patients with infections of the gum have been found to be at a greater risk of heart attack and stroke, as the bacteria in the mouth impacts the amount of plaque in the carotid artery especially.
  • The management of digestive issues: Chewing starts the digestive process. When there are problems in the mouth, and the chemical processes are not working correctly, that can lead to other problems throughout the digestive system, including intestinal failure, irritable bowel syndrome and other digestive issues.
  • Awareness of Diabetes complications: People with diabetes tend to have more problems with their dental health as well. On the flip side, those who have problems with their dental health may have a more difficult time controlling their blood sugar levels. Gum disease can have a significant impact on insulin resistance in the body. Those with diabetes must take extra care in maintaining good dental health, to help prevent further complications.

Our professional staff is always concerned about the health of all of our patients. We encourage everyone in the Livonia, Redford, Dearborn Heights, Plymouth, and surrounding Metro Detroit communities to learn more about the many ways good dental health can impact overall good health. We can start today with a thorough dental cleaning and check-up. Call our office to schedule that most important first step!

DeCapite Family and Cosmetic Dentistry is conveniently located in Livonia, near the intersection of Schoolcraft and Merriman Roads. We accept new patients and, of course, all emergencies.

4 Steps to Healthy Teeth This Spring

The flowers are soon to bloom in the Metro Detroit area. In Livonia, Redford, and all the surrounding region, we are ready for spring and the upcoming Easter season! It’s a great time of year to get outside, enjoy the fresh air, and focus on our health. Dental health is particularly important as Easter approaches, with its chocolate bunnies and candy eggs!

Dr. Jim DeCapite wants everyone in the Motor City and beyond, to take the following four steps that will help keep teeth healthy this spring and all year round:

  • Limit Easter candy: Easter time is so much fun, with egg hunts and family gatherings. Easter also means a lot of chocolate and sugar! Enjoy a few nibbles of that chocolate bunny or a bite or two of the sweet treats that taste so good, but keep it limited. Sweets are delicious, but indulging in too many is not good for keeping a healthy mouth!
  • Enjoy fresh, crunchy fruit and vegetables: Fresh, raw fruits and vegetables can be just as sweet and tasty as candy. A crunchy, juicy apple satisfies the taste buds and helps keep the mouth clean and healthy!
  • Remember to floss and brush: After indulging on that chocolate bunny, flossing and brushing are especially important! Ask Jim DeCapite about proper flossing and brushing techniques that will keep mouths healthy even when there are so many sweet treats around.
  • Schedule a dental cleaning: Spring is the perfect time of year to schedule that dental cleaning. While brushing and flossing every day will keep mouths healthy, a thorough dental cleaning takes it all one step further. A professional cleaning with DeCapite Family and Cosmetic Dentistry leaves the mouth healthy and the teeth ready for a beautiful spring smile!

At DeCapite Family and Cosmetic Dentistry, we want to help all of our patients take these steps toward a healthy mouth. We are excited about maintaining good dental health throughout spring and the rest of the year. For everyone in the Livonia, Redford, Dearborn Heights, Plymouth, and surrounding Metro Detroit communities, we are ready to schedule that very important appointment for a dental cleaning and check up!

We are conveniently located in Livonia, just of the Jeffries/ 96, near the intersection of Schoolcraft and Merriman Roads. We accept new patients and, of course, all emergencies. Call the office today to set an appointment!

3 Excellent Reasons to Spring Clean Dental Health

Spring is on its way to the Motor City! Each year around this time, all of us get the urge to do some spring cleaning around Livonia, Redford, and Metro Detroit. We want to clean closets, garages, closets, and kitchens. It is what everyone calls spring cleaning! Yet, spring cleaning is also great for our dental health! At DeCapite Family and Cosmetic Dentistry, we encourage our patients to also think about  scheduling regular dental cleanings as they work on preparing their homes for the newly arrived sunshine and fresh air!

Dr. Jim DeCapite emphasizes three very good reasons spring is a great time for dental health:

  • Bright and shiny smile: Start the spring season with a beautiful white smile! Brushing and flossing clean the teeth, but a professional dental cleaning will really put a shine on that smile! Of course, our patients smile even more because they know their teeth are clean and healthy with each and every professional cleaning.
  • Healthier mouth: A regular cleaning gives Dr. DeCapite the opportunity to check for other concerns before they become major issues. We look for signs of oral cancer, gum disease, and potential problems with decay or cavities. Preventing these health concerns gives us all a reason to smile even more throughout the spring season.
  • Improved techniques for maintaining dental health: During a dental cleaning, we give our patients advice on ways they can improve their dental health throughout the year. We help ensure they are brushing correctly and flossing regularly and with careful attention. We also advise patients who may have sensitive teeth!

At DeCapite Family and Cosmetic Dentistry, we look forward to the upcoming warm weather and Detroit Tiger Baseball. We also look forward to those patients who are calling to schedule regular dental cleanings. We are excited about serving all of our patients and maintaining their dental health throughout spring and the rest of 2017.

We look forward to meeting the dental needs of everyone in the Livonia, Redford, Dearborn Heights, Plymouth, Novi, Northville, and surrounding Metro Detroit communities. We are conveniently located in Livonia, near the intersection of the Schoolcraft Avenue service drive and Merriman Road. Remember, we accept new patients and, of course, all emergencies. 4 Great Ways to Manage the Motor City Sweet Tooth!

The sweetest holiday of all is coming up in February. Valentine’s Day is always celebrated in Metro Detroit with love and with candy! At DeCapite Family and Cosmetic Dentistry, we want everyone in Livonia and the Motor City to feel the love, but not necessarily the effects of the chocolate and candy hearts. Enjoy the day and enjoy indulging in a few sweet treats, but remember to keep that smile happy and healthy! Remember, many of us are still recovering from the holiday season, and many of us need to keep our “smile” resolutions in 2017 and hopefully make better choices for dental health.

Dr. Jim DeCapite offers four great strategies in managing our collective sweet tooth habit now and throughout the year:

  • Sweeten your breath with sugarless gum: Although it does not sound very romantic, chewing sugarless gum helps rinse off and neutralize acids that contribute to decay. Of course, sugar free wintergreen or peppermint gum and mints can also sweeten the breath!
  • Indulge in only healthy treats: Finish off a romantic Valentine’s dinner with fresh fruit and cheese instead of a sugary dish. Crunchy fruits like apples and pears are best for dental health, and the cheese provides the calcium needed for healthy tooth enamel.
  • Drink lots of water: Replace sugary sodas and other drinks with water throughout the day. The fluoride in most tap water contributes to healthier teeth. Staying hydrated is also good for the entire body, of course! Drink 60 ounces or more every day.
  • Say it with flowers or jewelry: Sometimes the best answer to that tempting sugar is to avoid it completely! Flowers and jewelry are great ways to show a little love on Valentine’s Day and throughout the year. Your best friend will love it!

The staff at DeCapite Family and Cosmetic Dentistry wishes everyone a Happy Valentine’s Day, full of healthy treats and good dental health. Our dental team in Livonia is ready to help all of our patients maintain their dental health during the sweetest of holidays and all year long. Remember, we are conveniently located in western Livonia, near the intersection of Schoolcraft and Merriman Roads.

We look forward to meeting the dental needs of our patients in the Livonia, Redford, Dearborn Heights, Plymouth, and surrounding Metro Detroit communities. We accept new patients and, of course, all emergencies. Call the office today to set an appointment!

3 Important Ways to Brighten Up the New Year

During the Christmas holidays across Metro Detroit, we all start to plan January and the beginning of the New Year.  Most of us will make 2017 resolutions that will lead to healthier and happier lives. At DeCapite Family and Cosmetic Dentistry, our goal is to help each and every one of our patients feel better about themselves and about their dental health. What could make us happier than being able to see people smile with clean, healthy teeth? A bright, confident smile is one of the best resolutions for starting and continuing in the New Year!

Dr. Jim DeCapite recommends three important ways to help our patients make sure their smiles are beautiful and healthy:

  • Regular brushing and flossing: A simple and easy method to a healthier, happier smile is brushing and flossing every day. Regular brushing keeps teeth clean and flossing helps get the areas clean where the toothbrush cannot reach. Brushing and flossing not only makes a smile nicer, but help prevent disease and decay that can certainly ruin that bright smile!
  • Professional cleaning: For the best results, a regular professional cleaning is also necessary to keep that smile happy and healthy. Dental hygienists can reach areas where flossing is less effective. A cleaning every six months or more frequently will keep that smile right and bright through 2017 and beyond.
  • Teeth whitening. Professional teeth whitening can restore a dull and yellowed smile. The process is reasonably quick and inexpensive, with lasting results. Having a professional teeth whitening procedure will ensure there is no damage done to the teeth or gums and it will provide amazing results!

The staff at DeCapite Family and Cosmetic Dentistry is ready to help all of our patients keep their resolutions for a beautiful smile and a healthier mouth. We are conveniently located in Livonia, near the intersection of Schoolcraft and Merriman Roads. Our professional staff looks forward to meeting the dental needs of our patients in the Livonia, Redford, Dearborn Heights, Plymouth, Novi, Northville and Detroit as well as other surrounding communities in the region. We accept new patients and, of course, respond to all emergencies.

Call the office today to get started on the good dental health that offers so many benefits!

4 Benefits for Dental Health from Dr. Jim DeCapite

ess-11-14-16-pixabay-smile-665433_640Across Livonia and Metro Detroit, we are all about keeping our patients healthy and smiling at DeCapite Family and Cosmetic Dentistry. While Dr. Jim DeCapite  focuses on dental health, the preventative work we offer in our Livonia office provides even more benefits for our valued patients. Our staff encourages everyone to maintain good oral hygiene, to brush and floss regularly, as make that important regular  cleaning with one of our professional dental hygienists.

Taking care of dental health, especially spending a few extra minutes to brush and floss, and keeping up to date on routine cleanings and exams, can provide even unexpected benefits.

From Dr. Jim DeCapite, here are four very important benefits when teeth are healthy:

  • Overall physical health: Dental health affects many parts of the body. We often do not think about our oral hygiene being connected to our heart, but gum disease has been shown to impact such health issues as heart disease and diabetes.
  • Financial savings. Extensive dental repair work can be expensive. Most dental plans cover the cost of routine exams and cleanings. And we want to be affordable for everyone who needs help with their dental health. It is with that in mind that we encourage all of our patients to take good care of their teeth now; it will prevent problems in the future.
  • Preserved memory. A surprising finding has suggested that patients with healthy gums actually perform better on memory tests than those patients who suffer from gum disease. Good dental health may actually help preserve excellent memory and cognitive skills!
  • Self-confidence. A nice smile and fresh breath always makes people feel better when in public. Knowing that our mouth is healthy and clean boosts self-confidence and gives us a better outlook on our day. Maintaining good dental health will help make sure that we are ready to smile with confidence. It brightens our day and all those around us as well!

Dr. Jim DeCapite is a skilled dentist with over 30 years of experience helping his patients take good care of their dental health. Every day, he looks forward to meeting the dental needs of his patients in the Livonia, Redford, Dearborn Heights, Plymouth, and surrounding Metro Detroit communities. Call the office today to get started on the good dental health that offers so many benefits!

We help you find your smile each and every day!

Happy Thanksgiving everyone!
